BISBEE, George Dana, George Washington, Louise, Mary Louise, Spaulding, Stanley
The book with these photos claimed Howland-Tilley descent (only) for this family but someone had the wrong Howland and missed the Priest, Billington, Samuel Fuller, Eaton, Warren, and double Allerton lines. If you are a descendant and can get ME vital records you can join the Mayflower Society on those six lines. Entries on MayflowerFaces are in alphabetical order but in birth order, these Bisbees run as the following 4 generations: George Washington Bisbee (1812-1872), son George Dana Bisbee (b 1841), grandchildren Stanley (b 1867) & Mary Louise (Mrs. Everett R. Josselyn, b 1873), great grandchildren Spaulding (b 1890) & Louise (b 1896), children of Stanley. G. W. Bisbee was a Gen 10 descendant of Degory Priest thanks to his mother, not the Bisbees, as follows: Joanna (Sturtevant) Bisbee, Isaac Sturtevant, Joanna (Waterman) Sturtevant, Anthony Waterman, Lidia (Cushman) Waterman, Elizabeth (Coombs) Cushman, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory of the Mayflower. You can calculate the Gen # of the rest on your own and see their other lines in the other pilgrim sections. Image & misleading info (except for the dates & places) from Alfred Cole & Charles H. Whitman, A History of Buckfield, Oxford County, Maine, from the Earliest Explorations to the Close of the Year 1900 (Lewiston, ME: CF Whitman, 1915), pp. 337-41, 531-41. (Author Charles Whitman was the Clerk of the Court for Oxford County, so had access to good local records.) Digitized by the New York Public Library.

BISBEE, REBECCA DELANO
Third cousin of G. W. Bisbee of Maine, above, she was ironically not a Delano, but was named for her father's first wife. This Rebecca, b. Kingston, MA 1817, later became the wife of Joseph Brown Hamlen, a lobster cannery owner, thus her inclusion in the book with this picture. They lived in MA, MD, NJ, and ME, but died back in MA, she in 1892. Rebecca is smiling because she has at least the 12 Mayflower lines I found in my usual quick search. She was a Gen 10 Priest as follows: Sally (Sampson) Bisbee, Sarah (Washburn) Sampson, Sarah (Waterman) Washburn, Anthony Waterman, Lydia (Cushman) Waterman, Elizabeth (Coombs) Cushman, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. The Priest silver book gets her maternal line as far as the birth and marriage of Anthony but the Alden-Mullins book gets it as far as all 4 of Rebecca's grandparents, Sarah Washburn & Jeremiah Sampson and George Bisbee & Grace Ripley. The John Howland silver book vol. 23 extends to the birth of her father, Zebulon Bisbee. Vital records on the NEHGS back this up as the families largely stayed in Plymouth County. I was able to work out most of her lines with NEHGS online resources, due to their collaboration with the GSMD to digitize Generation 5 of the Mayflower Families through Five Generations series (aka the silver & pink books,) The few holdouts were Rebecca's Soule, Brewster, and one Hopkins line. See her Alden-Mullins, Standish, Brewster, Allerton, Billington, Howland-Tilley, Cooke, Hopkins, and Soule writeups for those lineages. Image and info from H. Franklin Andrews, A Genealogy of James Hamlin of Barnstable, Massachusetts, Eldest Son of James Hamlin, the Immigrant, Who Came from London, England and Settled in Barnstable 1639, 1639-1902 (Extra, IA: author, 1902), p. 582, digitized by the Library of Congress. Note: the larger picture in the book reveals that Rebecca's hair is pulled back and she is wearing a lace veil or mantilla.

BOLSTER, WILLIAM WHEELER
Calling William Wheeler & cousins a Gen. 10 Priest is one of my "out on a limb" statements. (See William's Allerton writeup for details.) Here is the proposed Priest line: Alvan/Alvin Bolster, Hannah (Cushman) Bolster, Gideon Cushman, Caleb, Sarah (Eaton) Cushman, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. [Historical note: John Coombs and his brother Francis were the 2 children notoriously abandoned by first the father, then the mother, leaving John Sr.'s former apprentice, William Spooner, to care for them and their property, and pay the parents' bills. William rose to the occasion, establishing him as a young man of character.] Image & some info from H. BRIGGS, VELZORA
Velzora (b. Taunton 1897) is in the 1930 federal census as a registered nurse in Fall River, MA but whether she left descendants or had siblings who did is up to the reader to find out. In spite of a 2-generation foray into Hampshire Co, MA,, it was not hard to find 5 Mayflower lines thanks to the NEHGS (americanancestors.org) and the Mayflower Society silver books, which are partially digitized there under license. See the Eaton, S. Fuller, White, & Soule sections for those lines; she might have more pilgrim ancestors. Velzora's Gen 11 Priest line runs as follows, beginning with her mother: Lucy M. (Eaton) Briggs, Rollin B. Eaton, Rollin, John, John, Francis, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. You will want to get some land records on familysearch.org to augment the probate and vital records on the NEHGS site to strengthen the Rollin Sr.-John Jr.-John part due to the relocation. Image from The Journal (Taunton High School, 1917, p. 10, digitized on the Internet Archive.

COBB, WILLIAM SAMUEL
He was age 43 when he signed on as captain of Co. G, 3rd MA Vol. Infantry during the Civil War and began recruiting fellow New Bedfordites to serve. In civilian life, the author of the book with this photo described him as "in the outfitting business" (presumably for whaling voyages) and a past city marshall. (There might be a better image in New Bedford archives or histories.) After the war he became high sheriff of Bristol Co. I found nothing about marriage and death on the NEHGS so do not know if he left descendants. Born in Rochester 1817, William was six when his father, Dr. Samuel Cobb died and widow Jemima (Perkins) Cobb seems never to have remarried. Dr. Cobb was the source of William's Priest, Allerton, and Eaton genes. See the other write-ups for the other lines, but his Gen 9 Priest lineage, starting with his father, is: Samuel Cobb, Sarah (Cushman) Cobb, Caleb Cushman, Sarah (Eaton) Cushman, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. [Note: Degory married Isaac Allerton's sister Sarah, so there are common genes there.] Sarah (Cushman) Cobb is in the Eaton & Allerton books; vital records on the NEHGS provide the other details. Gammons, The Third Massachusetts Regiment Volunteer Militia in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1863 (Providence: Snow & Farnham, 1906), p. 221, digitized by the New York Public Libraries.

COFFIN, JUDITH
Her parents' marriage is Gen 6 in the Degory Priest silver book, and the Nantucket marriage records on the NEHGS database name parents of both parties and the death and birth records name parents and spouses, so it's easy to verify this is the same person. The caption beneath the photo states that Judith was 94 when this picture was taken and she did live to 95 years, 23 days, according to the death register of Nantucket for Sep-Nov 1881. Her first husband was Valentine Coffin and her second was Charles Folger. Since she did not marry until about age 46, I doubt if she left descendants but she may have Coffin siblings who did. Judith's Gen 7 Priest line would run: Mary (Cartwright) Coffin, Hazadiah Cartwright, Bethiah (Pratt) Cartwright, Joseph Pratt, Mary (Priest) Pratt. Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Image from William F. Macy and Roland B. Hussey, The Nantucket Scrap Basket (Nantucket: The Inquirer and Mirror Press, 1916), p. 23, digitized by the Library of Congress.

CONN, GRANVILLE PRIEST
It looks coincidental that his grandfather's surname was Priest, and I am guessing as to his grandparents, but using censuses, VRs, and naming patterns, he should be a double Gen 9 Priest descendant as follows: Sally (Priest) Conn, probably Jacob Priest, Jeremiah, Abigail (Holman) Priest, Jeremiah Holman, Mercy (Pratt) Holman, Mary (Priest) Pratt, Degory Priest of the Mayflower and thanks to a 1st cousin marriage: Sally (Priest) Conn, probably Jacob Priest, Mary (Whitney) Priest, Mary (Holman) Whitney, Jeremiah Holman, Mercy (Pratt) Holman, Mary (Priest) Pratt, Degory Priest again. The Priests and Conns were in Harvard, Worcester Co, MA and the original Priest (Gabriel) had 3 sons, all of whom had the births of their children recorded but that next generation seems to have taken a miss on birth-recording. Sally Priest was born around 1784 and married William Conn in 1811. The only Priest in the 1810 census with a hashmark where a 26-year-old female should be but missing a hashmark for a 36-year-old female in 1820 was Jacob. Granville Priest Conn was not apparently named after any "Granville Priest" but he had a sister named Mary Whitney Conn and Mary Whitney Priest, his mother's likely grandfather. Neither Jacob's probate record nor his Revolutionary War pension claim mentioned the Conns but by then they lived in NH and Sally's mother had died and Jacob had married again. Granville was born in 1832 in Hillsborough, NH and became a physician, an Army surgeon during the Civil War, and a leader in public heath, according to the author of the book with this photo. Descendants are eligible for membership in the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (DUVCW) and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) and assuming Jacob is the correct father, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), as well as the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and other groups. CUSHMAN, ARA
Ara, son of Ara and Esther (Merrill) Cushman, was a Generation 9 Priest but also an Eaton, Allerton, and Howland (twice) due to early intermarriages. (See those writeups for details.) The Priest silver book gives the line as: Degory, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, John Coombs, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, Sarah (Eaton) Cushman, Thomas Cushman. The Eaton & Allerton silver books and John Howland of the Mayflower vols. 2 & 3 all get as far as the birth of Ara's grandfather Thomas Cushman. He and wife Ruth Ring had only two children, including Ara, Sr. That Ara married Esther Merrill and had five children in Minot, ME. The younger Ara (pictured) lived from 1829 to 1904. The two older Aras are not in the NEHGS database but the marriage and WWI service of grandson Ara (b. 1872, Auburn, ME) is. If you read the writeup on this Ara in the book mentioned below you will agree it is unlikely that his widow and adult children, interviewed 4 or 5 years later for this book, invented Ara's parents and grandparents out of whole cloth. Still, if you are a descendant of this Ara, you would need to find documentation establishing all the links from the birth of grandfather Thomas Allerton (1758-1816) and grandmother Ruth Ring (m. 1783), you would need to search for Maine vital records. This book is a helpful roadmap but does not alone constitute proof. (While you are at it, see if Ruth Ring is a Mayflower descendant.) CUSHMAN, CHARLES
"Deacon" Charles Cushman, b. Bennington, VT 1773, was a Gen 8 Allerton by a different Coombs marriage than the other Cusmans on this page. Like them, he is a also an Allerton, but he and his son Charles Underhill Cushman, below, are not Eaton descendants. See his Allerton writeup for more specifics about this picture, his life, and that line. In this image, an engraving of a daguerrotype of a drawing, Charles was 75 but he looks mighty young to me so perhaps the engraver left off the wrinkles. Starting with his father, Charles's Priest line runs: Charles Cushman, Charles, John, Elizabeth (Coombs) Cushman, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Image and info from Henry Wyles Cushman, A Historical and Biographical Genealogy of the Cushmans: The Descendants of Robert Cushman, the Puritan, from the Year 1617 to 1855 (Boston: Little, Brown, 1855), pp. 129, 139-140, 341-2, digitized by the Boston Public Library.

CUSHMAN, CHARLES UNDERHILL
Son of Deacon Charles Cushman, above, Charles U. Cushman, b. NY 1802, was a Gen 9 Priest and Gen 8 Allerton. See his writeup on the Allerton page for all the specifics. See his father's Priest writeup, above, for that lineage, and remember to add another "Charles" on the left. This image was made when he was 52. Neither he nor his father look like the typical Cushman as described in their family biography, for what that's worth. CUSHMAN, HERCULES
The Hon. Hercules Cushman (1785-1832), shown here at age 44 (1829), was a Gen 8 Priest, Gen 7 Eaton, a Soule, Cooke, Standish, Alden, and Mullins descendant on his mother's side and a Gen 8 Warren and Gen 7 Allerton on his father's side. The image at top left is a scan of an engraving of a daguerrotype of an oil painting done from life. Hercules's Priest line runs: Mercy (Soule) Cushman, Jabez Soule, Mary (Eaton) Soule, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. The Priest book gets as far as Jabez Soule, the Eaton silver book gets as far as the birth of his daughter Mercy, and the Soule pink book covers her marriage to Noah Cushman. See Hercules' other write-ups for more details. CUSHMAN, JOSEPH AUGUSTINE
This picture is from a group photo of the Bridgewater Normal School (college) 1900 baseball team. Vital records for Joseph can be found fairly easily on the NEHGS site. The 1900 census was the first clue that his father and mother were both in their second marriages. If you are a descendant of Joseph's "brother" Albert (b. 1866), HIS mother was Elvina Thompson, a possible Cooke and/or Brown descendant. Albert would not have the Priest, Soule, Fuller, and Howland-Tilley ancestry that Joseph did. (See the Allerton, Soule, Cooke, S. Fuller, and Howland-Tilley sections for Joseph's other lines.) Joseph's Gen 10 Priest line runs: Jane Frances (Fuller) (Pratt) Cushman, Alfred Fuller, Faith (Soule) Fuller, Jacob Soule, Mary (Thomas) Soule, Sarah (Pratt) Thomas, Samuel Pratt, Mary (Priest) Pratt, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Image from the Historical Photographs Collection, Bridgewater State University Library, online courtesy Digital Commonwealth.
This picture is from a group photo of the Bridgewater Normal School (college) 1900 baseball team. Vital records for Joseph can be found fairly easily on the NEHGS site. The 1900 census was the first clue that his father and mother were both in their second marriages. CUSHMAN, LEVI
Sometime in the latter half of the 1700s Levi's branch of the family went to Oxford County, along the western edge of central Maine. Fortunately there was an old book about his town, Buckfield, and that helped sort out the Maine Cushmans because vital records in that state are hard to get. Levi (1848-1927) turned out to be the usual Allerton (twice) but also a Priest, Eaton, and Howland-Tilley descendant. Here is Levi's Gen 10 Priest line, beginning with his father: Levi Cushman, Caleb, Gideon, Caleb, Sarah (Eaton) Cushman, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. (The 3 Bolsters, above, also from Oxford Co, ME were second cousins.) See the Allerton, Howland-Tilley, and Eaton sections for those lines. Levi's photo, taken 1910-1920 is cropped from a larger image with his second wife, Eunice H. (Parker) Cushman on their farm. It was the Parker family that donated the image to the Princeton (MA) Historical Society, which kindly allowed Digital Commonwealth to scan it, so thank you non-line-carrying spouses everywhere.

CUSHMAN, SAMUEL
The Hon. Samuel Cushman of Portsmouth, NH (b ME 1783) was age 66 when the engraving reproduced in the book below was made. In addition to being a Priest descendant, he was a double Howland-Tilley, Allerton, and Eaton. His Gen 8 Priest line is via his paternal great-grandmother, as follows: Job Cushman, Thomas, Sarah (Eaton) Cushman, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. All his lines are in GSMD books through the birth of his father except the Priest volume. See the other sections for those specific lines. Image and info from Henry Wyles Cushman, A Historical and Biographical Genealogy of the Cushmans: The Descendants of Robert Cushman, the Puritan, from the Year 1617 to 1855 (Boston: Little, Brown, 1855), pp. 274-5, digitized by the Boston Public Library.

CUSHMAN, THOMAS HASTINGS
The Allerton silver book is 17 years old, so let's hope that the compilers of the next edition find Thomas's grandfather Paul, because he is in a Cushman genealogy but not in the Allerton book. Henry Wyle Cushman devoted several page to Thomas, including some poems, but the gist of it was that Thomas was an artist, visual and literary, who became a commercial engraver and around age 25 experimented with the daguerrotype process. Henry blamed that for Thomas's early demise but his lung troubles were more likely consumption, which was rampant then. This image was from an engraving made from an oil painting based on a daguerrotype Thomas made of himself. This was said to be a good likeness; it would be interesting to see that daguerrotype. Thomas is no older than 26 in this depiction, since he was born in Albany in 1815 and died there in 1841. Henry described him as "of middle height, with a strong frame; his head large, well developed and indicative of great and active mental powers - his features expressive, with a look of thoughtfulness and cultivation." His Gen 9 Priest line runs: Robert Smith Cushman, Paul, Seth, James Cushman, Elizabeth (Coombs) Cushman, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Thomas is also a descendant of Isaac Allerton. See that section for the lineage. You likely won't have any trouble proving Thomas an Allerton, but be very wary of the Priest claim. You will have some proving to do. The 2008 Priest silver book gets as far as the marriage of James Cushman to Sarah Hatch, then the NEHGS gets to the birth and marriage of his son Seth. Seth heads for the wilds of NY, according to the Cushman biography, and dies there with his children. He had 2 daughters and a PROBABLE son Paul, born at Charlestown, NH (not NY) in 1767, and orphaned 4 years later. He went to live with an unspecified uncle in VT. (See Paul's writeup for details.) DELANO, JEAN WALTERS
Known as Jennie, and named for her mother, Jean "Jennie" (Walters) Delano, in married life her surname was Edgell. In this 1898 image cropped from my photo of the bas relief by Daniel Chester French, sculptor of the Lincoln statue in the Lincoln memorial, she was eight years old. Jennie was a first cousin of U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt and like him a Priest, Allerton, Warren, and Cooke descendant on the Delano side. Her Gen 10 Priest line runs: Warren Delano IV, Warren Jr, Warren, Elizabeth (Cushman) Delano, James Cushman, Elizabeth (Coombs) Cushman, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. See the other pilgrims' sections for her other Mayflower lines. Photo © Maura Mackowski 2019, taken at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH.

EATON, EPHRAIM LLEWELLYN
When you check the Eaton silver book, you will see that the source for the descendants of Gen 5 Jabez Eaton is this man, the Rev. Ephraim L. Eaton (b 1846) of Wisconsin. Solomon Eaton, below, would be his grandfather's brother. If you wish you join on this line you will still have to document his claims beyond the birth of the 10 Jabez Eaton Jr. children of Middleboro, MA and NY state who seem to have survived to adulthood. Ephraim's Gen 9 Eaton line runs: Almond/Almon Ransom Eaton, Jabez Jr., Jabez, Francis, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. See the Eaton, Priest, and Alden-Mullins sections of this web site for those lineages. Image and info from Nellie Zada Rice Molyneux, History Genealogical and Biographical of the Eaton Families (Syracuse: Bardeen, 1911), pp. 43-44, 52-3, 62-3, 78-9, digitized by the Boston Public Library.

EATON, OLIVER
Oliver was a Gen 8 Priest, Gen 7 Eaton, Gen 8/9 Alden-Mullins, and Gen 9 Rogers descendant. He might have an additional Alden-Mullins line through his mother Polly Keith, b. ca. 1779, if you can find her. See Solomon's writeup for the Priest lineage. The book with the father-son images was rather lax in linking the two Eatons so you will need to get documentation beyond the birth of Solomon. It helps that the Middleboro book identifies Oliver's brother as Solomon K. Eaton, "K." probably standing for "Keith." Image & some info from Thomas Weston, History of the Town of Middleboro, Massachusetts (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906), p. 413, digitized by the Library of Congress.

EATON, SOLOMON
Like his son Oliver, above, Solomon is a Priest descendant plus an Eaton, Rogers, and Alden-Mullins. Solomon was an innkeeper and died in Bridgewater. His birth is in the Eaton and Alden silver books (Part 3) as Gen 6. His Gen 7 Priest line runs: Jabez Eaton, Francis Eaton, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest the pilgrim. See his Eaton, Rogers, and Alden-Mullins writeups for those lines. EDSON, SALLY
Sally (Edson) Eddy (1781-1850) should be a Gen 8 Priest, Gen 9 Rogers, and Gen 7/8 Alden-Mullins in addition to a Degory Priest descendant. See her Gen 7 Eaton writeup for the full story and that lineage and her Alden-Mullins & Rogers writeups for those lines. Her Gen 8 Priest line would run: Lucy (Eaton) Edson, Jabez Eaton, Francis, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. She would be the nephew of Solomon Eaton, above, first cousin of Oliver Eaton, and her sister Lucy was the grandmother of Francis G. Pratt, below. Image from R. H. FAIRBANKS, GEORGE W.
The book from which this photo comes claims Howland-Tilley descent for George but misses the Priest & Allerton connections. Thanks to his mother, Lydia (Chipman) Fairbanks and her mother, Anna (Waterman) Chipman, George was a Gen 9 Priest, 8 Allerton, and 7 Howland-Tilley. Anna's father Joseph Waterman was a Gen 6 Degory Priest descendant and a Gen 5 Allerton via his mother Lydia (Cushman) Waterman. Joseph is in the Priest and Allerton silver books, his daughter Anna is in the Allerton volume only. Note: there is an error in the Allerton book on page 148, describing Lydia (Cushman) Waterman as the daughter of Joseph Cushman, but reading from front to back, you will discover that she was the daughter of his brother, Eleazer Cushman and Elizabeth (Coombs) Cushman. George owes a lot to the women in his family! He is the father of Henry Fairbanks, below. Image and some info from History of the Town of Wayne, Kennebec County, ME (Augusta: Maine Farmer Publishing, 1898), pp. 224-5. Digitized by the New York Public Library.

FAIRBANKS, HENRY NATHANIEL
Son of George W. Fairbanks, above, and Lucy (Lovejoy) Fairbanks, he was a Gen 10 Degory Priest descendant, a Gen 8 Howland-Tilley, and a Gen 9 Allerton. There might be a better picture in a Civil War publication or web site, as he served in 3 units: Co G, 3rd ME Volunteers, Co C, 44th MA, then Co E, 30th ME Volunters. Image from History of the Town of Wayne, Kennebec County, ME (Augusta: Maine Farmer Publishing, 1898), pp. 226. Digitized by the New York Public Library.

FISHER, SARAH CORDELIA
The book with this picture reported that Sarah was the descendant of "old Middlesex County [MA] families" but apparently the memory of Degory Priest was long gone. The line goes through a maternal grandmother orphaned around age 12, so that may be where the memory was lost. Sarah was heavily involved in music, including a directorship in the Cambridge, MA Conservatory of Music, founded by her father George Fisher. Her 1887 marriage to Austin Clark Wellington (who died in 1888) was noted, but no children were mentioned. They were in their mid forties at that point. It is worth looking for siblings and Swan cousins in the Cambridge, MA area. Sarah's Gen 9 line runs: Hannah Cordelia (Teele) Fisher, Eunice (Swan) Teele, George Swan, Samuel, Ebenezer, Mary (Pratt) Swan, Mary (Priest) Pratt, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. The posthumous birth of George Swan and his marriage to a Prudence Swan (apparently not a Mayflower descendant) is in the Priest silver book. Image and info from Mary Elvira Elliot, et al., comp., Representative Women of New England (Boston: New England Historical Publishing, 1904), 132-3, digitized by the Boston Public Library.

FRENCH, ALICE
Born in Andover, MA in 1850, she became an author, writing under the name "Octave Thanet." You can still buy her books on amazon.com, where she has her own "page" (but minus a photo.) Her birth can be found on the NEHGS, along with her parents' marriage, and her father's line ad infinitum but since her mother's maiden name is not legible on the marriage record I turned to findagrave (Iowa) to learn that mother was a Morton of Taunton, MA. Her Gen 9 Priest line runs, beginning with her mother: Frances W. (Morton) French, Marcus Morton, Mary (Cary) Morton, Mary (Pratt) (Washburn) Cary, Samuel Pratt, Samuel, Mary (Priest) Pratt, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Marcus Morton's picture is on findagrave and probably elsewhere, as he was a senator, governor, state supreme court justice, etc. The Priest silver book gets as far as the marriage of Marcus's parents, Mary and Nathaniel III. Image of Alice and some info from Benjamin F. Gue, History of Iowa from the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Twentieth Century, Volume Four (NY: The Century History Company, 1903), 94-95, digitized by the New York Public Library.

HARRINGTON, MAYDELL GERTRUDE
Maydell's mother's maiden name was Eaton and they lived in Bristol Co, so it was worth searching for a Mayflower ancestor in spite of her less-likely surname: "Harrington." Two years after graduation from Taunton High School (1917) Maydell married Leroy Parker Rogers, son of Tappan Rogers & Susan Parker, but those appear to be the Rogerses of Essex Co, MA, not descendants of Mayflower passenger Thomas Rogers. Thanks to Maydell's mother, though, her Rogers children, if any, would be Priest, Eaton, Doty, and Alden-Mullins descendants, with possibly more Mayflower ancestry as well. (See those sections for those lines.) Maydell's Gen 12 Priest line runs: Addie J. (Eaton) Harrington, Otis Eaton, Charles, Apollos, Joel, Joseph, Francis, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Image from the Journal (Taunton High School: 1917), p. 20, on Internet Archive.

Howard, Daniel S.

Born in 1818, Daniel Howard carried the genes of 9 Pilgrim lines in his blood thanks chiefly to his mother, Lucy Sturtevant, whose paternal grandfather Silas Sturtevant (Priest, Eaton) married Elizabeth Samson (Alden-Mullins & Standish). Thus, a Gen 9 Priest, Daniel was also a Gen 8 Standish, Eaton, & Doty (twice), Gen 8/9 Alden-Mullins, and Gen 9 Cooke, Hopkins, and Chilton (I think.) Great Grandfather Silas Sturtevant is in the Priest Silver Book and Lucy's father is in the Eaton book. Elizabeth Samson is in the Alden book. Read the brothers' other write-ups for the rest of the story. Daniel was born in Brockton, Plymouth County, where he died in 1904, and he was the older brother of Gorham Bradford Howard, below. Info and image from Representative Men and Old Families of Southeastern Massachusetts, v. I (Chicago: J. M. Beers, 1912), pp.42-43, digitized by the Boston Public Library.
Howard, Gorham Bradford

As the younger brother (b. 1827) of Daniel S. Howard, above, Gorham was also a Gen 9 Priest, Generation 8 Eaton, Standish, & Doty (twice), Gen 8/9 Alden-Mullins, and Gen 9 Cooke, Hopkins, and Chilton (I believe). Their Priest line runs: Lucy (Sturtevant) Howard, Ephraim Sturtevant, Silas Sturtevant, Elizabeth (Eaton) Sturtevant, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. The Priest silver book gets as a far as the birth and marriage of Silas Sturtevant and the Eaton book also includes Silas, grandfather of Gorham & Daniel. MITCHELL, HENRY
Like his sister Maria, below, Henry was a Generation 9 Priest descendant. See Maria's writeup for details. Both were professors, and Henry may be the professor of oceanography and hydrology described and depicted at a younger age on Wikipedia. The whiskers are the same, only black, and his father was also named William but the connection with Prof. Maria Mitchell was not specified in either's Wikipedia entry. This image and info about their relationship and lineage is from Lydia S. Hinchman, The Early Settlers of Nantucket, 1659-1850, 2d ed. (Philadelphia: Ferris & Leach, 1901), pp. 76, 142-6, digitized by the Library of Congress, with the image photographed from the hardcover copy at the LOC by a helpful reader for a clearer image.

MITCHELL, MARIA
Nantucket astronomer Maria Mitchell was a Gen 9 descendant of Degory Priest. The Priest silver book gets as far as the marriage of Gen 6 ancestor James Cartwright to second wife Love Macy, and the book from which this image was taken accurately describes the rest of the lineage. It runs: William Mitchell, Lydia (Cartwright) Mitchell, James Cartwright, Hazadiah, Bethia (Pratt) Cartwright, Joseph Pratt, Mary (Priest) Pratt, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Image and info from Lydia S. Hinchman, The Early Settlers of Nantucket, 1659-1850, 2d ed. (Philadelphia: Ferris & Leach, 1901), pp. 12, 142-6, digitized by the Library of Congress. The picture was photographed by a kind reader visiting the LOC in Washington, which has a hardcover copy of the book. This gives a much sharper image than the digitized book, so thank you, kind reader.

PERKINS, ELIJAH EATON
Civic-minded merchant Elijah, born in Middleborough, MA in 1804, was a descendant of Degory Priest, Francis Eaton, and Dr. Samuel Fuller, thanks to his namesake maternal grandfather. For what little I know about his paternal line, see the Fuller writeup. For now, we will go with Elijah's maternal line. His Gen 8 Priest line runs: Lucretia (Eaton) Perkins, Elijah Eaton, Francis, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory of the Mayflower. The Priest silver book ends with the birth and marriage of grandfather Elijah but the birth and marriage of his daughter, Elijah's mother, is in the Eaton and S. Fuller silver books. Note: the grandfather had some half-siblings who were Alden descendants. Image and a tiny bit of information from Thomas Weston, History of the Town of Middleboro, Massachusetts (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906), p. 410, digitized by the Library of Congress.

PRATT, FRANCIS GREENLEAF, JR.
On his paternal grandmother's side, Francis (1850-1894) was a Priest, Eaton, Alden-Mullins, and Rogers descendant and a fairly close relative of Oliver & Solomon Eaton, above. Sally Edson, also above, niece of Solomon Eaton, was likely Francis's grandmother's sister. Francis worked in publishing and was a personal acquaintance of the author of the book with this photo, a history of their church in Middleborough, MA. On his father's side Francis was also a Warren & Allerton and a Billington & Hopkins through his mother. (See those other sections for the lineages.) Beginning with his father, Francis's Gen 10 Priest line runs: Francis Greenleaf Pratt Sr., Lucy (Edson) Pratt, Lucy (Eaton) Edson, Jabez Eaton, Francis, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Most of the lineage data used came from the vital records and some probate records on the NEHGS but the image & a little biographical data came from Thomas Weston, Two Hundredth Anniversary of the First Congregational Church of Middleboro, Massachusetts (Middleboro: 1st Congregational Church, 1895), pp. 92, 120, 126, digitized by the Library of Congress.

ROBINSON, EVERETT
The Eaton silver book gets as far as the birth of attorney Everett Robinson's maternal grandfather, Joel Eaton, in 1751, and by backtracking you learn that Everett was also a Priest and Alden-Mullins descendant. Great grandfather Joseph Eaton's birth & marriage are in the Priest silver book. The book with this picture (left) gives only his date (22 Jan 1816) & place of birth (Middleboro, MA) and his father (Josiah Robinson) but the vital records from that period are on the NEHGS and the family was small enough that they were not hard to find. Everett had at least the 2 sisters and 1 brother noted on the same page of VRs as he, so the odds are there are more descendants out there. Everett's Gen 9 Priest line runs: Caroline/Carolina (Eaton) Robinson, Joel Eaton, Joseph, Francis, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. See his Eaton and Alden-Mullins write-ups for those lines. Image & some info from Thomas Weston, History of the Town of Middleboro, Massachusetts (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906), p. 236, digitized by the Library of Congress. Image scanned from a hard copy at the LOC by me for better resolution.

SOULE, LEWIS F.
This Soule's link to the Pilgrim must have been lost in the mists of time due to family migration and some early deaths, perhaps, because it is not mentioned at all in the book from which this image was taken, History of Salem, N.H. It may not help that many of the town's early settlers were from Salem, MA, not a hotbed of Pilgrim activity. Lewis was a Gen. 10 Degory Priest descendant and also a Gen. 9 descendant of George Soule & Francis Cooke. (See those write-ups for the lineages.) Before you run out and submit your Mayflower application, be aware that the Soule Pink Books (which follow this line the farthest) only get as far as his presumed great grandfather, Anson Soule. Lewis, his father Samuel W., and grandfather Daniel Soule all appear in Maine federal censuses and this link is based on a findagrave entry that says Daniel's father was Anson Soule and Lucinda French (aka Waitstill L. French, b. Taunton so a possible Mayflower descendant.) It also hinges on Samuel's findagrave entry being correct about his birth date because the 1850 census had 2 Samuels in Pownal. ME. Possibly they were the same young man but the one with the matching age was with Daniel's family; the younger one was a hired farm hand. If this line is yours, and you prove this writeup to have errors or be totally wrong, please let me know and I will change or remove it. Here is the Priest line, if correct: Samuel W. Soule, Daniel, Anson, William Soule, Mary (Thomas) Soule, Sarah (Pratt) Thomas, Samuel Pratt, Mary (Priest) Pratt, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Image and a little info from Edgar Gilbert, History of Salem, N.H. (Concord, NH: Rumford, 1907), pp. 165, 431. Digitized by the University of New Hampshire Libraries.

TALLMAN, WILLIAM
Seen here on a Fairhaven High School senior trip to George Washington's home in Mt. Vernon, VA in 1910, when a high school education was extremely rare. This image comes from a group portrait owned by the New Bedford Public Library and online courtesy of Digital Commonwealth. Here is a link to the photo, which was a newspaper clipping identifying each individual student. A look at the NEHGS site quickly turns up William's birth record and his parents' marriage. Seeing that his mother's maiden name was Delano sent me to the Delano "green books" published by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. There they were, William's parents. I will leave the details to your investigation, but William's paternal grandparents were both Delanos and the writeup in the green book claims Warren, Hopkins, Cooke, and Alden-Mullins, descent from the grandmother alone. The grandfather added the Priest line, another Warren, and an Allerton. You can enlarge this photo with decent results, as you can see on the left.

Thompson, Albert Cranston

Albert Cranston Thompson had the blood of 7 Pilgrim ancestors, so a family resemblance to anyone on this web site is unlikely. His Priest (Gen 10), Cooke (Gen 8, twice), Hopkins (Gen 9), and one of two Soule (both Gen 9) lines were via both his paternal great-grandparents, Adam Tomson (senior) and Molly Tomson, only distantly related. Both were Generation 5 Cooke descendants and appear in the Cooke Silver Book, with son Adam (Albert C.'s grandfather.) From his paternal grandmother, Salvina Wood, daughter of Salvina Soule and Capt. Timothy Wood, he was a Generation 9/10 Alden-Mullins and a Generation 9 Soule & Standish descendant. Albert C.'s mother was a Warren from Vermont, and research there may turn up additional Mayflower ancestry. Image from Representative Men and Old Families of Southeastern Massachusetts, v. I (Chicago: J. M. Beers, 1912), p. 169, digitized by the Boston Public Library.
THOMPSON, BERTHA AVERY (See Jabez Thompson)
THOMPSON, FRED PARKER (See Jabez Thompson)
THOMPSON - JABEZ, FRED PARKER & BERTHA AVERY
These were cropped from a family photo on Digital Commonwealth, contributed by a descendant of Bertha, here (1902) a 3-year-old on her mother's lap, while Fred was a 20-year-old standing next to his father Asaph, age 49. Fred and Bertha had several other siblings in the picture but the caption writer did not name everyone in this group of 25 so the only people positively identified were the mother & toddler, father & oldest son. The mother (See Abbie Parker Wood in the Alden-Mullins, Soule, Standish sections) was identified by cross-checking with another photo the same contributor supplied, identifying only a handful of women in a group BUT the same photo had also been contributed by someone who identified everyone. Caution: The identity of Fred and Asaph depends on me correctly picking out a man about the same age as his wife (Abby Wood) and standing next to a male of about 20. The Thompson children have 9 pilgrim ancestors, with duplicates in Alden-Mullins, Standish, and Soule (see those sections for the lines.) They are also Priest, Eaton, Rogers, Cooke, and Hopkins descendants. (See the appropriate sections for those last 4 lines.) Their Priest ancestry begins with the Gen. 10 father: Jabez Thompson, Eliza R. (Soule) Thompson, Jabez Soule, Jabez, Zachariah, Mary (Eaton) Soule, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. TINKHAM, H. ELBRIDGE
Ensign H. Elbridge Tinkham, USN (1833-1894), was a Gen. 9 Degory Priest descendant, and Gen 9 also from George Soule, Myles Standish, and Peter Brown. He was Gen. 8 from Francis Eaton and 8/9 from the Alden-Mullins pilgrims. He was born in Middleboro and this photo likely dates from his Civil War service (1861-67). He was a shoemaker. Pilgrim Peter Brown's daughter married the first Tinkham in the area, Ephraim of Plymouth County, so look for anyone of that surname in the Brown silver book. Elbridge's other Pilgrim ancestry is via Seth 5 Tinkham's marriage to Eunice 5 Soule, daughter of Zachariah and Mary (Eaton) Soule. Elbridge's Priest line runs: Harvey Tinkham, Hazael, Eunice (Soule) Tinkham, Mary (Eaton) Soule, Mary (Coombs) Eaton, John Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. Image from A History of the Town of Freetown, Massachusetts, with an Account of the Old Home Festival, July 30th 1902 (Fall River: Franklin, 1902), p. 110, digitized by the Library of Congress.

Washburn, Frederic Augustus

Frederic was a Gen 9 Priest descendent due to the marriage of Eleazer Cushman, Isaac Allerton's grandson, to Elizabeth Coombs, a Degory Priest descendant of the 4th generation. Descendants of John Washburn (age 14), who arrived in Boston in 1635 with his mother Marjorie and brother Philip (11) are all Cooke relations, as he married Cooke granddaughter Elizabeth Mitchell. Frederic (1834-1908) was a Gen 9 Cooke. The Cushman surname found in or near Plymouth County in the 18th century almost always signals an Allerton descendant. Isaac's daughter Mary Allerton married Thomas Cushman, whose parents had been a member of the same religious congregation in Leyden. Frederic's great-grandmother Mary (Cushman) Washburn (1725-1808) is in the Allerton Silver Book as Gen 5, making Frederic a Gen 8 Allerton. Other female surnames in the Washburn family are worth an examination as well: Packard (great-grandmother), Rickard (paternal grandmother) and Gifford (mother). WOOD, WILKES
You run across the Hon. Wilkes Wood of Middleborough (1770-1843) a lot in genealogical research in SE MA because he was judge of probate for so long. Hercules Cushman, above, was one of his students. Wilkes was a Priest and Howland descendant and he married a Tinkham, a Thompson, and a Cushing, so look for addtional (Cooke, Browne) descendants along his line. Wilke's Gen 7 Priest line runs as follows: Sally (Bennett) Wood, Cornelius Bennett, Ruth (Coombs) Bennett, Francis Coombs, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, Degory Priest of the Mayflower. See the Howland-Tilley section for that line. The Priest silver book gets as far as the marriage of his parents but John Howland of the Mayflower v1 includes Wilkes' birth. It would be nice to have a photo; please get in touch if you know of one. Do not be surprised if you find one in which he was bald or balding; he might be wearing a wig or this might be a painting in early middle age. A little info from Thomas Weston, History of the Town of Middleboro, Massachusetts (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906), pp. 229-30, digitized by the Library of Congress. Image scanned by me from original at the LOC.
