This is short notice, but tomorrow, Nov. 9th, the West Valley Genealogical Society near Sun City, AZ will be selling some of the "castoffs" from the recent AZ state genealogy library closing and resettlement. The volunteers who offered to go through the holdings and try to winnow them are selling them at the Society's regular meeting, which is NOT at their library, but at First Presbyterian Church, 12225 N. 103rd Ave., Sun City, AZ 85351, in Swain Hall. The sale starts at 12:30 pm, with speakers on the Revolutionary War period later and a short business meeting. Cash and checks only. I asked Friday at the state archive what was up with a sale on short notice, without any public notice ahead of time as to what was being sold (not everyone can make a noontime Monday meeting in Sun City, AZ.) The reply was that at this point items for sale are duplicate copies of things. Hopefully that is the case and any future sales would be preceded by a lot of broadly dispersed advance notice and a list of items for sale. It can be done and would increase turnout and sales. The money generated tomorrow is supposedly going "to facilitate the efforts to find a new home for the State Genealogy Collection." It is unclear what that means specifically. The email forwarded to me said tomorrow's sale items include Colonial era, Virginia, other mid-Atlantic states, the South, and some surname and reference books. If you attend, please let us know what you learned. Please spend a lot of money, too, as the WVGS is a good group.
