Westport Historical Society photos online

I do not know if they allow use of their images on web sites like this so I will be cautious until I find out and just post a link to their site. It is confusing to navigate, and I've been doing this for decades and used to write for a well-known online service provider. Here is the link to Random Images, which is where you go to browse and just see what they have. That is honestly your best bet, though slow. There is no page with just a search box, where you type what you want and get hits, then pick the hit. "Advanced Search" will not turn up the photo you just saw in the Random Images section. If you know exactly what you  want you can do a "Keyword Search" but must use "quote marks" for a phrase or for a first and last name, and choose "items with images only" to avoid getting hundreds of hits. You can experiment with the other pages but you will see what I mean. This used to be a very basic site and it's "new and improved to serve you better." Anyway, as an example, IF this is the correct Asa Howland - and assuming the photo was identified correctly - enter "Asa Howland" image-only, and you will see him and wife "Nancy." If it is the Asa and Nancy from Conway, there is no explanation as to why they would be in a Westport museum. I found no connection working backwards but maybe his or her descendants migrated there. (I think I will donate my whaler great-grandfather's photo to a nice museum in Arizona.) If this is who I am guessing it is, one Gen 7/8 line runs John, Job, John, John, John, John; a second runs John, Hannah (Jenkins) Howland, Benjamin Jenkins, Lydia (Howland) Jenkins, Joseph Howland, John of the Mayflower. Without confirmation this is the correct person in the photo, I won't check on other lines. Other surnames with potential are Sherman, Sisson, Handy, Gifford, Ellis, Packard, Seabury, Snow, Davol, Brownell, Macomber, White, Hathaway, Mosher, and Tripp.

new Billington silver book forthcoming

The GSMD has announced that Part 2, the second volume of the Billington family, will be out soon. This will cover Generations 6 and name those born in Gen. 7, which should get you to your patriot ancestor if you are a DAR or SAR member. The definition of "soon" can range from "last week - didn't we tell you?" to "sometime within the next year" to "wait, we spoke too soon." When it actually appears in my mailbox I will post an announcement. Stay tuned.

New image found of a Gen 6/7 Alden-Mullins descendant

No, I did not find it, I'm simply passing on some info in the latest online newsletter of the NEHGS. A new daguerrotype of John Quincy Adams has been found, and you can see it here: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/16/arts/design/john-quincy-adams-daguerreotype-sothebys-auction.html. You can download it and enlarge it for a better idea of what he looked like. It does resemble a much-older version of the painting in the Alden-Mullins section, so that was probably a decent resemblance of him as a young man. Taken in March 1843 it is claimed to be the oldest surviving photo of a US president.

Do you have a face for radio?

The deadline for registering for the GSMD Triennial Congress is tomorrow, the 12th, and you cannot register at the door. As a last-minute incentive, I'm passing on this announcement from the Governor General:
"Mayflower Congress 2017 will be welcoming BBC Radio Nottingham from the UK.  The radio station is making a series of programs celebrating the links between Nottinghamshire and the Pilgrim Fathers, notably William Brewster who originally came from Scrooby in Nottinghamshire and travelled on the Mayflower. They will interview Brewster descendants, cover the Sunday morning church service at the Fort, as well as the Pilgrims Progress that afternoon."
So, if you would are a Brewster descendant or want to see a radio show being made, come on down. Go to the GSMD home page, and under "News & Events" select "Congress 2017." It will ask you to log in as a member, then you can sign up for the fun and frivolity.

meet Peleg Ford Clapp, a Doty & Warrren - courtesy DUVCW

The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (DUVCW) has been working on the publication of a volume of writeups & photos of all their ancestors who joined the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) after the War. (The GAR was the forerunner of modern groups like the VFW and was instrumental in establishing pension and medical care benefits as the right of veterans and survivors.) The DUVCW announced at its annual convention last week in Grand Rapids, MI, that the publication would now be a website: DUVCWGAR.org.

Mayflower descendant Peleg Ford Clapp is there, and there are probably others. Peleg served in both the infantry and artillery and achieved the rank of second lieutenant. NEHGS online vital records show he was born in Scituate, MA in 1835 and was a Gen 8 Doty and Warren descendant, as follows: Harriet (Ford/Foord) Clapp, Dr. Peleg Ford, Nathaniel, Alice (Warren) Ford, James Warren, Nathaniel, Richard Warren of the Mayflower; Harriet (Ford/Foord) Clapp, Dr. Peleg Ford, Nathaniel, Alice (Warren) Ford, Sarah (Doty) Warren, Edward Doty, Edward Doty of the Mayflower.

If you would like to see pictures and data contributed so far by the 4,000 DUVCW members, go to DUVCWGAR.org.  You can search the database by name or place. This is brand new, so the DUVCW welcomes your feedback as well.
