Welcome to Mayflower Faces!

Nobody knows what any of the Pilgrims looked like, with the exception of Edward Winslow, who had his portrait painted in London later in life. It is now on display at the Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, along with that of his son Josiah Winslow.

Perhaps looking at their descendants can give us a clue. Click on a Pilgrim family name and see images of that individual or couple's descendants. This website will feature as many Pilgrim descendant images as we can find. To protect the privacy of the living, only images from before 1920 are used (in the case of personal photos) or earlier than 1923 for public domain photos.

If you have some images you would like to share or new sources to recommend, we'd love to hear from you. (Please, ONLY send us public domain images or photos whose copyright you own.) We especially welcome photos of females, individuals who are not extremely young or extremely old, people without hats on, and men who do not have facial hair. Since most of the photos here date from the mid-to-late 1800s, when elaborate beards and mustaches were apparently mandatory, it is not always easy to make out facial features. The same is true for women (and men) in hats, which hide hair and hairlines.

Please remember that the main purpose of this website is the images. Each writeup also gives what I know, surmise, or am pretty sure is true about that individual's link to one or more Mayflower pilgrims, and mentions sources I used. You cannot submit this web site as a source with any lineage society, though. You still need to find and turn in actual vital records. Your best source for New England vital records before about 1920 is the New England Historic Genealogical Society online, aka AmericanAncestors.org.

Smartphone users: At the top of your screen, to the left of "Mayflower Faces" you will see a box with 3 white horizontal stripes. That is a menu button. Click and you will see the buttons for choosing a Pilgrim, accessing the blog, and all the other features.

Please note that photos labeled the property of an individual (e.g., the webmaster, me) are NOT in the public domain and may NOT be downloaded and republished online or anywhere else without written permission from the owner and a credit line indicating that you got the image from mayflowerfaces.com.
